Manche m\u00f6gen meinen, dass ich diese Affinit\u00e4t zu den Sakya habe, weil ich angeblich einer der Tulkus des Dzongsar-Klosters bin, das schlie\u00dflich zu einem Sakya-Kloster wurde. Aber das stimmt nicht. Es liegt an dieser Art der Khon. Au\u00dferdem mag ich einfach das Wort \u201eKhon\u201d. Es hat eine gro\u00dfe Anziehungskraft auf mich, nicht zuletzt, weil die Bedeutung \u201eGroll\u201d mitschwingt. Von der Khon Familie hei\u00dft es, sie sei aus einem Schlachtfeld nach einem Krieg zwischen himmlischen Wesen und Rakshasa-D\u00e4monen hervorgegangen. Der Lehrer, der mich bei meinem ersten Besuch bei der Khon-Familie begleitete, schw\u00e4rmte von ihnen und sagte, sie seien himmlische Wesen, die vom rechten Weg abkamen. Einige Mitglieder der Khon Familie schlie\u00dfen niemals beim Schlafen die Augen, was ein \u00dcberbleibsel dieser himmlischen Abstammung ist.<\/p>\n
Die Khons haben noch weitere charakteristische Merkmale \u2013 ihre Hautfarbe, ihre besondere K\u00f6rperhaltung, die Art, wie sie Ohrringe tragen und ihr Haar in der Mitte scheiteln, manchmal mit bunten B\u00e4ndern flechten und um den Kopf wickeln. Das ist sehr edel. Ich bezweifle, dass sich Verhalten und Auftreten dieser Sippe seit den Zeiten von K\u00f6nig Trisong Deutsen je ge\u00e4ndert haben.<\/p>\n

Meine erste Erinnerung an den 41. Kyabje Sakya Trizin stammt aus Dehradun, als ich etwa neun oder zehn Jahre alt war und er wohl in seinen Zwanzigern. Kyabje Sakya Trizin war, wie ich bereits in einer <\/u>fr\u00fcheren Episode <\/u>erw\u00e4hnt habe, derjenige, der mich als Tulku anerkannte. Sp\u00e4ter studierte ich am Sakya College, das er 1972 gr\u00fcndete, und ich hatte das Gl\u00fcck, viele tantrische Einweihungen von ihm zu erhalten. Als wir uns zum ersten Mal trafen, sa\u00df Kyabje Sakya Trizin im schwach beleuchteten Tempel des Sakya-Zentrums (eigentlich nur ein Zelt aus Abdeckplanen) und war der einzige wei\u00df gekleidete Mensch unter all den rotbraunen Roben. Ich konnte nicht ausmachen, ob diese Gestalt auf dem Thron m\u00e4nnlich oder weiblich war. Ich nahm ganz rein und unschuldig an, dass er beides sein k\u00f6nnte. Ich w\u00fcnschte, ich h\u00e4tte diese Unschuld noch heute. Leider bin ich meinen Kindertagen entwachsen und kann ihn nur noch als Mann wahrnehmen, obwohl ich danach strebe, ihn jenseits davon zu sehen. Er sa\u00df auf dem Thron und gab Einweihungen, und ich war fasziniert von der besonderen Art, wie er die Damaru mit einer leichten Drehung schlug. Sp\u00e4ter versuchte ich, seine elegante Art nachzuahmen.<\/p>\n

Meine Faszination und Bewunderung f\u00fcr das Aussehen der Khon und das gesamte Ngakpa[i]<\/span><\/a> Ph\u00e4nomen hat nicht nachgelassen. Da ich selbst in eine Yogi Familie geboren wurde, war der Anblick eines Yogis nichts Neues f\u00fcr mich. Aber die makellose, majest\u00e4tische und elegante Ausstrahlung von Kyabje Sakya Trizin und auch des 11. Minling Trichen hebt sich von allen anderen Yogis ab, mit denen ich aufgewuchs. Das k\u00f6nnte daran liegen, dass Sakya Trizin und Minling Trichen zwei der letzten verbliebenen yogischen Ngakpas sind, deren DNA bis in die Zeit von Guru Rinpoche zur\u00fcckgeht. Wenn ich die Geschichten von Guru Rinpoche und K\u00f6nig Trisong Deutsen mit ihrem Gefolge aus Yogis lese und mir vorstelle, wie sie im Samye-Kloster waren, dienen mir Sakya Trizin und Minling Trichen als Anschauung. Dann f\u00e4llt es mir leicht, mir vorzustellen, wie diese Leute gewesen sein m\u00fcssen.<\/p>\n Kyabje Sakya Trizin ist nicht nur ein gro\u00dfer Meister, sondern auch ein freundlicher und liebensw\u00fcrdiger Gastgeber, der immer ein Gef\u00fchl von zuhause vermittelt. Als ich aufwuchs, verbrachte ich viel Zeit im Haushalt von Kyabje Sakya Trizin. Er bestand darauf, dass wir gemeinsam zu Mittag und zu Abend a\u00dfen, und sa\u00df dabei auf einem Stuhl oder manchmal auf einem kleinen Thron, den Rest der Familie um sich versammelt. Die Diener brachten das Essen der Reihe nach herein. Einige seiner Diener stammten aus Tsang, sie umgab ein Hauch von Eleganz. Sie waren h\u00f6flich, zuvorkommend und taktvoll und sehr aufmerksam, wie die Butler einer k\u00f6niglichen Familie. Er hatte einen der besten K\u00f6che, dessen Spezialit\u00e4ten luftige Momos und Amdo-Brot waren. Ich versuchte, von diesem Mann zu lernen, und durch ihn erfuhr ich, was Backpulver war.<\/p>\n Ich hatte das Gl\u00fcck, Kyabje Sakya Trizins Tante kennenzulernen, die mir ein Gef\u00fchl der Zugeh\u00f6rigkeit gab. Zu meiner t\u00e4glichen Praxis geh\u00f6ren viele Nyingmapa-Gebete, und wann immer ich Zeit mit den Sakyapas verbrachte, f\u00fchlte ich mich unbehaglich. Aber als ich h\u00f6rte, dass seine Tante \u00e4hnliche Nyingmapa-Gebete sprach, obwohl sie eine Khon, eine Sakya, war, ging es mir gleich besser. Sie best\u00e4tigte und ermutigte mich, und ihre Gebete zeigten mir, dass die \u00e4ltere Generation nicht so sehr unter dem Einfluss von Cliquen stand.<\/p>\n Eine meiner sch\u00f6nsten Erinnerungen an Kyabje Sakya Trizin ist ein gemeinsamer Spaziergang \u00fcber die Hauptstra\u00dfe von Dehradun, Astley Hall, zu dem er mich und die anderen Begleiter mitnahm und f\u00fcr uns Tee an einem Stand bestellte. Das schien so gew\u00f6hnlich. Er war immer neugierig, alles M\u00f6gliche zu erfahren. Selbst heute noch, wenn wir miteinander sprechen, ist das Gespr\u00e4ch immer so allumfassend, er ist sehr wissbegierig. Von den vielen gro\u00dfen Meistern, die ich kennengelernt habe \u2013 wie dem 16. Karmapa und Dudjom Rinpoche \u2013 ist Kyabje Sakya Trizin einer der wenigen, die sich auf dem Laufenden halten und Zeitungen und Zeitschriften lesen. Ich erinnere mich, dass er zu einer Zeit, als das Konzept eines Abonnements praktisch unbekannt war, bereits jede Woche das Magazin Newsweek <\/em>nach Hause geliefert bekam.<\/p>\n Obwohl er so neugierig auf die allt\u00e4gliche Welt ist, hat er auch etwas \u00dcberirdisches an sich. Wir leben in einer Zeit, in der rationales Denken und Logik hochangesehen sind, aber tun wir nicht nur so, als wollten wir, dass alles so logisch sei? Denn wenn etwas Magisches passiert, gibt es einen Teil von uns, den das gl\u00fccklich macht.<\/p>\n Der nat\u00fcrliche Gang der Dinge und das Wesen des Daseins sind nicht unbedingt logisch; wir m\u00fcssen erst lernen, der Magie skeptisch gegen\u00fcberzustehen. Dennoch sind wir stolz darauf, skeptisch zu sein. Aufgrund dieser Skepsis kann unser beschr\u00e4nkter rationaler Verstand die Magie und die Kraft der Segnungen nicht erfassen.<\/p>\n Aus der Sicht derjenigen, die das Gl\u00fcck haben, rationale Grenzen gar \u00fcberschreiten zu wollen, verk\u00f6rpert Kyabje Sakya Trizin diese Magie und diese Segnungen. Deshalb ist seine Pr\u00e4senz so \u00fcberaus wichtig. Wer zu logisch ist, bleibt in einer Zone stecken und dreht sich im Kreis wie eine Katze, der ein St\u00fcck Fleisch an den Schwanz gebunden wurde. Die Vernunft ist eine Leine, die einen an diese Zone bindet und daran hindert, auszubrechen.<\/p>\n Ich kannte Kyabje Sakya Trizin, als er noch jung und unverheiratet war, und schon damals gab es keinen Zweifel, dass er sehr besonders war. Viele hofften, dass er die Linie weiterf\u00fchren w\u00fcrde, und erwarteten, dass er Kinder zeugte. Ich kannte seine k\u00fcnftige Frau, Dangmo Gyalung Chenmo, schon bevor die beiden sich begegneten und heirateten. Sie stammt aus der Familie Hochotsang, ihr Vater war ein hoch angesehener aristokratischer Arzt, er galt als einer der besten in Derge. Hocho Anjam war auch ein gro\u00dfartiger Kalligraph. Wie die gesamte Familie Hochotsang war er Khyentse Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6 sehr ergeben, und ich glaube, er entschloss sich in Sikkim im Exil zu leben, weil Khyentse Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6 nach Gangtok gezogen war.<\/p>\n Gyalung Chenmo kam oft zur Gangtok Khyentse Labrang, wo ich lebte, um Gerste zu r\u00f6sten und andere Hausarbeiten zu verrichten. Wir behandelten sie wie jede andere gew\u00f6hnliche Person. Die Jahre vergingen, und sie wurde die Frau von Kyabje Sakya Trizin, und bald kam Ratna Vajra Rinpoche, dann Gyana Vajra, und inzwischen haben beide ihre eigenen Kinder, die Enkelkinder von Kyabje Sakya Trizin.<\/p>\n Kyabje Sakya Trizin mit seiner Schwester Jetsun Kushokla, seinen beiden S\u00f6hnen, Seiner Heiligkeit dem 42. Sakya Trizin Ratna Vajra Rinpoche und Dungse Gyana Vajra Rinpoche, sowie seiner Enkelin Jetsunma.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n Vor kurzem tat er etwas sehr Revolution\u00e4res und Vision\u00e4res, indem er den Thron der Sakya an die n\u00e4chste Generation abtrat, an seinen Sohn und einen der Erben der Sakya-Linie, Ratna Vajra Rinpoche, den 42. In the country where I was born, I wonder if the people even consider what Thai Buddhists teach as authentic Buddhadharma. For sure they consider Thai Buddhism to be\u00a0a lower Buddhism, whereas their Buddhism is the highest. In the country where I was born, I don't think people know that China has the second longest lineage of Buddhism, after India. China has been a vessel and patron of Buddhism for centuries, but in the country where I was born, China is synonymous with Mao Tse-tung.\r\n\r\nI was born in that country into a strong clique. My father comes from the Nyingmapa clique and my mother comes from the Kagyupa clique. But it so happens that karma had something else in store for me. I have long had the feeling that I am the subject of the Khon,<\/em> which is another clique altogether, the family of the Sakyas.\r\n\r\nSome might think that I have this affinity with the Sakyas because I'm supposedly one of the tulkus of Dzongsar monastery, which eventually became a Sakya monastery. But it is not. It's because of this breed of Khon. Also, I just like the word \"Khon.\" It's very attractive to me, not least because it has the connotation of \"grudge.\" The Khon family is said to have emerged from the battleground after a war between heavenly beings and the rakshasa demons. The tutor who accompanied me on my first visit\u00a0to the Khon family\u00a0raved about them, saying that they were heavenly beings who had gone astray. Some of the Khon family, when they sleep, never close their eyes, which is a residue of this heavenly pedigree.\r\n\r\nThe Khons have other distinguishing features\u2014the color of their skin, their particular posture, the way they wear earrings and part their hair down the middle, sometimes braiding it with colorful strings and wrapping it around the crown of their head. It's so classic. <\/p>\n\r\n\r\nMy first memory of the 41st Kyabje Sakya Trizin was in Dehradun when I was about nine or ten years old and he must have been in his twenties. Kyabje Sakya Trizin, as I mentioned in a previous episode<\/a>, was the one who recognized me as a tulku. Later I studied at Sakya College, which he established in 1972, and I have been fortunate to receive many tantric initiations from him. The first time we met, Kyabje Sakya Trizin was sitting in Sakya Center's dimly lit temple of (which was actually just a tarpaulin tent), the only white-clad being among all those maroon robes. I couldn't make out whether this figure on the throne was male or female. I had a pure, innocent acceptance that he could be both. I wish I could still have that innocence. Alas, I have grown out of my childhood and can only perceive him as a man, although I aspire\u00a0to see him beyond that. He sat on the throne and gave initiations and I was mesmerized by the distinct way he beat the damaru with a slight rotation. Later I tried to imitate his elegant ways.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nMy fascination and admiration for the Khon look and the whole ngakpa[1]<\/a> phenomenon has not subsided. Being born in a yogi family myself, the sight of a yogi was nothing new to me. But the stainless, immaculate, majestic, elegant presence of Kyabje Sakya Trizin, and also of the 11th Minling Trichen, stands out from all the other yogis I had grown up with. This could be because Sakya Trizin and Minling Trichen are two of the last remaining yogi ngakpas, whose DNA can be traced back to Guru Rinpoche\u2019s time. When I read the stories of Guru Rinpoche and King Trisong Deutsen with their entourage of yogis and imagine them in Samye Monastery, I can use Sakya Trizin and Minling Trichen as a reference. Then I have no problem visualizing what those guys must have been like.\r\n\r\nKyabje Sakya Trizin is not only a great master, he is a welcoming and gracious host who always creates a sense of home. When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time in Kyabje Sakya Trizin's household. He would insist that we have lunch and dinner together and would sit on a chair, or sometimes on a small throne, with the rest of the family sitting around him. The attendants would bring the food in one by one. Some of his attendants were originally from Tsang and had an air of elegance. They were courteous, polite, and subtle, and very observant, like the butlers of a royal family. He had one of the best cooks, whose specialties were puffy momos and amdo bread. I tried to learn from this man, and it was from him I was introduced to the phenomenon of baking powder.\r\n\r\nI had the merit to meet Kyabje Sakya Trizin's auntie, who gave me a sense of belonging. Among my daily practices I have many Nyingmapa prayers, and whenever I spent time with the Sakyapas, I felt awkward. But when I heard his auntie doing similar Nyingmapa prayers even though she was a Khon, a Sakya, it made me feel better. She gave me a sense of confirmation and encouragement, and her prayers showed that the older generation wasn't so influenced by cliques.\r\n\r\nOne of my fondest memories of Kyabje Sakya Trizin is when he took a walk with me and the other attendants down Dehradun's main road, Astley Hall, and he ordered tea from a tea stall. It was seemingly so ordinary. He was always curious to know about all kinds of things. Even today when we speak, the conversation is so all inclusive, he\u2019s very inquisitive. Of the many great masters I have been acquainted with\u2014such as the 16th Karmapa and Dudjom Rinpoche\u2014Kyabje Sakya Trizin is one of the few who keeps up with the times, reading newspapers and magazines. I remember that long ago, he had Newsweek <\/em>magazine delivered to his home every week, when the concept of a subscription was practically unheard of.\r\n\r\nEven though he is so curious about the mundane world, he also has an otherworldly quality. We live in a time in which rational thinking and logic are cherished, but aren't we only pretending that we want things to be so logical? Because when something magical happens, there is part of us that is happy.\r\n\r\nLogic is not necessarily the natural way of being; we have to learn to be skeptical about the way of magic. Nevertheless, we are proud of being skeptical. Because of that skepticism, the magic and the power of the blessings cannot be conceived by our narrow rational minds. For those who are so fortunate as to even try to transcend rational limitations, Kyabje Sakya Trizin embodies that magic and those blessings. His presence is of utmost importance because of that. If you are too logical, you become stuck in a zone going around and around like a cat with meat tied to its tail. Reason is a leash that keeps you in that zone, unable to break out.\r\n\r\nI knew Kyabje Sakya Trizin when he was young and not yet married, and even then there was no doubt that he was special. There was so much hope for him to take on the lineage, and expectation for him to father children. I knew his future wife, Dangmo Gyalung Chenmo, before they met and married. She is from the Hochotsang family, the daughter of a highly respected aristocratic physician, considered one of the best in Derge. Hocho Anjam was also a great calligrapher. He, like the entire Hochotsang family, was devoted to Khyentse Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6, and I believe the reason he decided to live in exile in Sikkim was because Khyentse Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6 had moved to Gangtok.\r\n\r\nGyalung Chenmo often came to the Gangtok Khyentse Labrang, where I was living, to roast barley and do other chores. We treated her as any other ordinary person.
