Saat itu awal tahun 1960-an dan di seluruh wilayah Himalaya, segalanya tampak berantakan. Biara-biara dihancurkan. Para guru besar dibunuh. Banyak keluarga yang mengungsi. Kemudian Tsewang Paljor meninggalkan jabatannya sebagai chagz\u00f6d Labrang Khyentse dan banyak orang mungkin mengira takdir dan nasib baik silsilah Khyentse telah berakhir.<\/p>\n
Seseorang harus mengambil alih posisi itu. Tampaknya, satu-satunya orang yang memenuhi syarat adalah Tashi Namgyal dari keluarga Drumo. Keluarga Drumo adalah keluarga bangsawan kerajaan Derge. Bukan saja mahir, ia jelas menikmatinya dan selalu merawat tanduknya dengan cermat. Ia juga seorang instruktur gyaling yang hebat, nada-nada yang diajarkannya masih dimainkan sampai sekarang. Namun Anda tak bisa menemukan orang yang begitu pelupa seperti dia. Ia sering pergi ke pasar untuk membeli sesuatu dan kembali dengan tangan kosong. Atau ia mencari jubahnya kemana-mana kemudian menyadari bahwa ia sudah mengenakannya.<\/p>\n Tashi Namgyal terkenal lambat bergerak dan bertele-tele. Ketika kami bepergian dengan kereta api melintasi India, selalu ada momen menegangkan saat ia turun di halte sepanjang perjalanan untuk minum secangkir teh atau air panas. Kereta selalu membunyikan peluit tiga kali sebelum meninggalkan stasiun lagi. Aku ingat berkali-kali mendengar peluit ketiga dan setelah kereta bergerak, melihatnya berlari mengejar kereta sambil membawa teh panas, melompat ke gerbong pada saat-saat terakhir. Untungnya kereta api di India bergerak lambat, dan di kompartemen kelas tiga dimana kami duduk tidak ada pintu yang menghalanginya untuk melompat masuk.<\/p>\n Karena ia seorang bangsawan, Tashi Namgyal memiliki sepupu, dan keponakan yang tak terhitung jumlahnya. Ia menyayangi mereka dan sebaliknya mereka memujanya. Ia memancarkan aura\u00a0 \u201cpaman yang baik hati\u201d di mata anak-anak muda ini. Ia juga suka menonton pertandingan sepak bola lokal di Gangtok. Mau hujan atau tidak, ia datang ke stadion dengan papan kayu di tasnya; karena itu bukan stadion yang layak, ia butuh papan sebagai tempat duduk. Tentu saja, aku tidak pernah diizinkan meninggalkan halaman, apalagi menghadiri pertandingan sepak bola bersamanya.<\/p>\n Mengenang kembali masa kecilku, ada banyak hal yang bisa kusyukuri. Jelas sekali aku punya begitu banyak pahala karena telah bertemu dengan jalan Siddhartha, dharma, dan banyak guru yang luar biasa. Namun sekarang aku baru sadar bahwa ketika Chagdz\u00f6d Tsewang Paljor berhenti dan Tashi Namgyal menjadi chagdz\u00f6d-ku dan kemudian menjadi penanggungjawab-ku, ini juga suatu pahala yang besar.<\/p>\n Ketika inkarnasi seorang lama diidentifikasi, biasanya para pelayan berpikiran dan berpandangan sempit tentang bagaimana anak-anak itu dilatih. Seringkali para pengiring dan chagz\u00f6d melakukan kesalahan pada sisi sektarianisme dan hanya memperkenalkan satu tradisi. Namun dalam kasusku, begitu ada berita tentang inisiasi atau ajaran, baik dari Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche atau Karmapa ke-16 atau HH Sakya Trizin atau banyak guru lainnya, Chagdz\u00f6d Tashi Namgyal akan memastikanku ada di sana dengan segala cara. Bukan saja hal ini tidak lazim, tetapi juga sangat sulit baginya untuk mengatur ini karena labrang tidak punya uang.<\/p>\n La mengirimku kesana-kemari meskipun banyak pertentangan dari berbagai macam orang yang mengkritiknya di belakang. Para Nyingmapa menggerutu karena ia membawaku ke ajaran Sakyapa dan Kagyupa. Sakyapa menggerutu karena ia membawaku ke Kagyupa dan Nyingmapa. Tanggapannya terhadap keluhan-keluhan ini selalu berupa senyuman lebar. Tidak pernah ada konfrontasi. Tapi ia tegas dan tahu apa yang perlu ia lakukan. Ia bahkan menolak guru besar Nyingma, Chatrul Rinpoche, ketika beliau menawarkan untuk mengawasi studiku. Meskipun Tashi Namgyal mendorongku untuk menerima ajaran dari Chatrul Rinpoche, ia tidak ingin menyerahkanku sepenuhnya pada satu tradisi.<\/p>\n Kakekku Dudjom Rinpoche bersama Chatrul Rinpoche<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n Dalam pikiran Tashi Namgyal, aku harus menjadi orang yang non-sektarian karena aku dianggap sebagai inkarnasi dari Dzongsar Khyentse Ch\u00f6kyi L\u00f6dro yang, di antara banyak alasan lainnya, dihormati karena dedikasinya yang tak tertandingi terhadap semua silsilah ajaran Buddha Tibet. Lalu, pada tahun terakhirku di perguruan tinggi, Tashi Namgyal memaksaku untuk keluar tepat sebelum akhir tahun, yang berarti aku tak ikut ujian dan karena itu aku tak pernah lulus. Aku kesal dengan keputusannya saat itu karena artinya aku tak punya ijazah. Jawaban Tashi Namgyal saat itu adalah tak ada ijazah yang lebih berharga selain gelar Jamyang Khyentse.<\/p>\n Meski saat itu kurang enak didengar, namun ini membekas karena bertahun-tahun kemudian, ketika aku gagal menyelesaikan gelar masterku di SOAS di University of London, aku tak terlalu pusing. Ini pasti pengaruh Tashi Namgyal.<\/p>\n SOAS di Universitas London<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n Dengan kesetiaannya pada tradisi Rime, walaupun ia bukan seorang cendekiawan hebat, Tashi Namgyal mengalahkan orang-orang yang disebut sebagai orang terpelajar yang sebenarnya berpikiran sempit dan sektarian. Pendidikanku bisa dibimbing olehnya, karena pahalaku. Aku tak bisa membalas kebaikannya ini.<\/p>\n Ayahku<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n Jika aku menyebutkan pahalaku dalam konteks ini, aku juga harus menyebut keluargaku. Keluargaku sangat Nyingmapa. Kakekku, Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche, dan ayahku Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche, keduanya memiliki posisi berpengaruh dalam tradisi Nyingmapa. Mereka bisa saja dengan mudah mempengaruhi Labrang Khyentse dan menuntut agar aku tak mengikuti semua ajaran Kagyupa dan Sakyapa, namun keluargaku tidak pernah ikut campur. Melihat beberapa inkarnasi saat ini dengan keluarga dan labrang yang mengendalikan pelatihan dan pengasuhan mereka, aku sungguh menghargai kemurahan hati dan kepercayaan keluargaku.<\/p>\n Shamar Rinpoche<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n Tashi Namgyal, sebagai bangsawan Khampa, menghargai kehormatan keluarga. Anda bisa menafsirkan ini sebagai kesetiaan atau Anda bisa menafsirkannya sebagai nepotisme. Adiknya melahirkan Shamar Rinpoche. Bertahun-tahun kemudian, Shamar Rinpoche terlibat dalam perselisihan mengenai penobatan inkarnasi Karmapa ke-17. Shamar Rinpoche mendukung satu Karmapa, dan Situ Rinpoche mendukung Karmapa yang lain. Then Tsewang Paljor left his post as chagz\u00f6d of Khyentse Labrang and many people probably thought the fate and good fortune of the Khyentse lineage had ended.\r\n\r\nSomeone had to step into his shoes. The only eligible person, it seems, was Tashi Namgyal of the Drumo family. The Drumo family was an aristocratic family of the Derge kingdom. When Tashi Namgyal was born, a soothsayer said that this boy would not live long so his family offered him to become the attendant of Dzongsar Khyentse Ch\u00f6kyi Lodr\u00f6. Growing up, Tashi Namgyal wasn't known as being learned. The only thing he ever really studied was blowing the gyaling<\/em> (a Tibetan horn). Not only was he very good, he clearly enjoyed it and always cared for his horns meticulously. He was an excellent gyaling instructor as well, some of the tunes he taught are still being played today. And yet you couldn't find someone as forgetful as him. He would often go to the market to buy something and come back empty handed. Or he would be searching everywhere for his robe only to realize he was already wearing it.\r\n\r\nTashi Namgyal was notoriously slow moving and longwinded. When we'd travel by train across India, there was always a tense moment when he would disembark at stops along the way to get a quick cup of tea or hot water. The train would always whistle three times before leaving the station again. I remember so many times hearing the third whistle and watching him jog after the moving train with his hot tea, leaping into the car at the last moment possible. Luckily these Indian trains moved slowly, and in the third class compartments where we sat had no doors barring him from jumping on.\r\n\r\nBecause he was an aristocrat, Tashi Namgyal had countless cousins, nephews and nieces. He loved them and in turn they adored him. He exuded \u201ckind uncle\u201d to these young people. He also loved watching local football matches in Gangtok. Rain or shine, he would go to the stadium with a wooden plank in his bag; since it wasn't really a proper stadium, he needed the plank as a seat. Of course, I was never allowed to leave the grounds, let alone attend a football match with him.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nLooking back at my childhood, there are a lot of things that I can be grateful for. Obviously I had so much merit to have met the path of Siddhartha, the dharma, and many incredible masters. But I now realize that it was also great merit when Chagdz\u00f6d Tsewang Paljor quit and Tashi Namgyal became my chagdz\u00f6d and subsequently my caretaker.\r\n\r\nUsually when a lama\u2019s incarnation is identified, the attendants are very narrow minded and shortsighted about how the boys are trained. Often the attendants and chagz\u00f6ds err on the side of sectarianism and only introduce one tradition. But in my case, the moment there was news of an initiation or teaching\u2014whether it was from Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche or 16th Karmapa or HH Sakya Trizin or many other masters\u2014Chagdz\u00f6d Tashi Namgyal would make sure I was there at all costs. Not only was this unconventional, it was very difficult for him to arrange because the labrang was penniless.\r\n\r\nHe sent me here and there despite a lot of opposition with all kinds of people criticizing him behind his back. Nyingmapas grumbled about him taking me to the Sakyapa and Kagyupa teachings. Sakyapas grumbled about him bringing me to the Kagyupas and Nyingmapas. His response to these grumblings was always a big smile. There was never a confrontation. But he was firm in knowing what he needed to do. He even turned down the great Nyingma master Chatrul Rinpoche when he offered to supervise my studies. While Tashi Namgyal encouraged me to receive teachings from Chatrul Rinpoche, he didn't want to surrender me entirely to one tradition.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_301\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"773\"] My grandfather Dudjom Rinpoche with Chatrul Rinpoche<\/em>[\/caption]\r\n\r\nIn Tashi Namgyal's mind I should be as nonsectarian as possible because I was supposedly the incarnation of Dzongsar Khyentse Ch\u00f6kyi L\u00f6dro who, among many other reasons, was revered for his unparalleled dedication to all the lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. Tashi Namgyal was committed to continuing this tradition by introducing me to all these great masters and their teachings and blessing.\r\n\r\nWhen I was enrolled in Sakya College studying Buddhist philosophy, the college had a comprehensive curriculum that required strict attendance. But in the middle of the semester, Tashi Namgyal often took me out of school to attend teachings or initiations. This raised eyebrows. Then, in my last year at the college, Tashi Namgyal insisted I leave right before the end of the year, which meant I missed the examination and therefore I never graduated. I was annoyed by his decision at the time because it meant I would have no diploma. Tashi Namgyal's response was that there is no more precious diploma than the title of Jamyang Khyentse.\r\n\r\nEven though at that time it wasn't pleasant to hear, it must have made an impression because years later, when I failed to finish my master's degree at SOAS at the University of London, it didn\u2019t really bother me. This must be Tashi Namgyal\u2019s influence.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_300\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"300\"] SOAS at the University of London<\/em>[\/caption]\r\n\r\nWith this loyalty to the Rime tradition\u2014even though he wasn\u2019t a great scholar\u2014Tashi Namgyal eclipsed those so-called learned people who were actually quite narrow minded and sectarian. It was my merit to have my education guided by him. I cannot repay his kindness enough for this.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_299\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"928\"] My father<\/em>[\/caption]\r\n\r\nIf I mention my merit in this context, I also have to mention my family. My family was strongly Nyingmapa. My grandfather, Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche, and father Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche, both had influential positions within the Nyingmapa tradition. They could have easily influenced Khyentse Labrang and demanded that I not be taken to all these Kagyupa and Sakyapa teachings, but my family never interfered. Looking at some of the present incarnations with families and labrangs controlling their training and upbringing, I now appreciate my family\u2019s generosity and trust.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_297\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"850\"] Shamar Rinpoche<\/em>[\/caption]\r\n\r\nTashi Namgyal, being a Khampa aristocrat, valued family honor. You could interpret this as loyalty or you could interpret it as nepotism. His sister gave birth to Shamar Rinpoche. Many years later, Shamar Rinpoche was involved in the dispute over the enthronement of the 17th<\/sup> Karmapa incarnation. Shamar Rinpoche endorsed one Karmapa, and Situ Rinpoche endorsed a different one. As an uncle, Tashi Namgyal was strongly on the side of Shamar Rinpoche. But to his credit, he never once, not for a minute, tried to influence me to side with him. On the contrary he reminded me that geographically Dzongsar Monastery was close to Palpung Monastery in Derge, and so too were the previous incarnations of Situ and Khyentse, and that this should be remembered.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_303\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"620\"] Tai Situ Rinpoche with on of the 17th Karmapas<\/em>[\/caption]\r\n\r\nIf I have any sort of appreciation and veneration for the different schools\u2014not only different schools of Tibetan Buddhism\u2014but other Buddhist traditions such as Zen and Theravada, I have to say that Tashi Namgyal played a role in that. Tashi Namgyal died in Bir 08\/08\/07, August 8, 2007.
